CPO Science Park winner Zuiderkerk prize 2019

16 December 2019

CPO Science Park is the surprising winner of the Zuiderkerk prize 2019, the most important architecture prize for housing projects.

The Zuiderkerk Prize is an initiative of the Municipality of Amsterdam and one of the longest existing prices for housing in the Netherlands. The prize is awarded every year to the most exceptional and sustainable housing project that has been delivered within the municipal boundaries of Amsterdam.

The Zuiderkerk prize, which was awarded for the 22nd time, is the most important award for the best housing project of the past year and is awarded to the architect and the client. Pontsteiger and Rhapsody were the other two nominees.

The CPO Science Park, a striking residential building on Carolina MacGillavrylaan in East Amsterdam, is one of three Amsterdam buildings competing for the Zuiderkerk prize 2019. Atelier van Wengerden designed the building, which consists of sixteen apartments, and also designed the interior of six of them . The collective project, for different people in different phases of life, shows that living at the Science Park is also pleasant.

The jury writes: "This project can set an example in the fierce battle for the city, to create beautiful, good and sustainable homes. It shows that it is possible to build affordable homes with self-determination and passion. CPO Sciencepark is a beautifully open block that extends upwards on a small base and also makes a turn. "

"Compared to the relatively anonymous university buildings in the area, CPO (which stands for Collective Private Commissioning) is a relief."

Pieters has provided structural advice for this project from secondary education up to and including construction supervision. We are extremely proud of this prize.
