Official opening of the Middelstum Child Center

5 December 2019

In the bright autumn sun, Loppersum alderman Bé Schollema (Education and Sustainability) opened our new children's center in Middelstum yesterday in the presence of pupils, teachers and parents. During the ceremony, the new name of the sustainable and earthquake-resistant childcare center was also revealed: WIJland.

Island
The name refers to the beautiful island-like location of the childcare center, where the parties involved (WE) shape the childcare center in good cooperation. These parties consist of the local library, two primary schools and a childcare organization.

A special aspect of the design is that most classrooms not only have a door to the corridor, but also to the outside. In this way the lessons from inside and outside can be linked to each other, so that the children can connect with nature on "their island".

The building
The building is divided into 4 clusters that stand as pavilions in the grounds. They have a green appearance with a curved awning, which gives the classrooms their own covered outdoor space for the extension of the educational function. The facades have a modular composition and are clad with preserved wood in a playful distribution and provides a natural and warm appearance. It harmonizes with the green natural design of the site.
