New education building Tilburg University

29 March 2018

On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, the new Education & Self-study Center (OZC) was opened on the campus of Tilburg University. The Provisional Design started in March 2016. Exactly 24 months later, the building, which is awarded the sustainability label BREEAM, has been opened.

KAAN Architects has designed a square, relatively low building that fits well between the other buildings and the green on the campus. A lot of daylight and spectacular views ensure that the building is connected to the environment. By making all rooms wide, high and light, the building is prevented from feeling full and busy. That is necessary, 2,500 to 3,000 students a day use this building. The building has a central, deepened auditorium with space for 600 students. In addition, large examination halls, teaching rooms and self-study rooms are available.

The construction has been placed outside the facades at various places in the building and the construction is an important part of the desired appearance. Special couplings have been made for the load-bearing outer columns with the floor constructions located inside. In the voids that give the building its spatial appearance, some spectacular staircases are present.

The construction is a combination of steel constructions, work-poured and prefabricated concrete constructions. Large spans have also been made with steel trusses to enable the column-free lecture halls.
