National Concrete Prize 2017

Category Bridges and viaducts: Catharinabrug, Leiden

Jury report:
The Catharinabrug in Leiden is particularly beautiful. Thanks to the use of ultra-high-strength concrete, the designers succeeded in creating a superdunne bridge, only 27 cm thick. This has succeeded in making a very slight slope for pedestrians and cyclists, while sufficient altitude has been created for pleasure boats and other vessels. In addition, this very dense concrete is less sensitive to attack and pollution. Here many birds have been hit in one blow by the application of a special technology. Leiden has a monument to it.

The Concrete Prize is a biennial prize for projects in which the material concrete has been applied in a special way
